Freebie from Joni :)

My good friend Joni Horn has been so gracious and has found a great freebie for us today that I wanted to pass along! She is a fellow couponer here in Mercer County and I appreciate her sharing her finds with me and allowing me to share them with you :)
The freebie that she found is for Land O Lakes butter! This week at Kroger you can get it on sale for $1.00. Combine this offer with the "Save $.50 on 1" (Kroger doubles to $1.00) coupon that was in the 1/9 Smart Source and this item is FREE!
*If you don't have this coupon you can go to this site, sign up for their rewards club, and print a "Save $.35 on 1" coupon. Kroger will double this price to $.70 making this butter only $.30! Be sure and print two coupons from this site so you can stock up on this deal!

FREE Miracle Whip Sample

Head on over here to request your 2 free samples of Miracle Whip! Who doesn't like something free?!

A GREAT Deal!

I have cashed in on this deal twice now and keep forgetting to pass it along! Sun Drop 2 liters are on sale this week for only $1.00. Kroger has an eCoupon that allows you to save $.75 on one Sun Drop product making a 2 liter only $.25! I had 1 coupon on my card last week and then when Kroger added new eCoupons I got another so you may have 2 on your card if you haven't used them already. I don't drink anything with caffeine in it, but Chad says he likes it! His expert opinion is "it has more of a lemony flavor than Mt. Dew." So for $.25 it may be worth it for you to try some Sun Drop today :)

*Please note that it is Kroger's policy NOT to accept eCoupons in combination with paper coupons. I have found that some stores will allow you to use both, but beware that you may not be allowed to do so everywhere*

Which paper should I buy today?

Every week I get asked the same question by many of you..."Which paper has the best coupons?" Well I have decided that each week I will be doing a blog entry bright and early on Sunday morning to tell you which paper here in Kentucky has the best coupons! Here is what I have for you today:

The Danville Advocate Messenger has no coupons in their paper today! I'm not sure why, but I checked 2 different papers on the news stand and there were no coupons. I even called my mom (bright and early) and asked her if her paper had coupons in it because she is a weekly subscriber. She also found no coupons in her paper so I think it is safe to say that purchasing the Advocate this week just for the coupons...is not a good idea!

The Lexington Herald Leader did have coupons in their paper...but they were limited! This week's edition included a Red Plum insert with coupon that included:
6 coupons for McDonald's that allowed you to buy one item get one free
Save $1.00 on Sprayway Glass Cleaner
Save $1.00 on any Sundown Vitamin
Save $1.00 on Air Wick Scented Oil twin refill pack or 2 single refills
Free Air Wick Warmer when you buy air wick scented oil refill fragrance
Save $3.00 on Air Wick Freshmatic Compact Odor Detect Starter Kit
Save $1.00 on an Air Wick Candle

*There may have been more...I am going off memory for what was in there!*

The last paper I checked out was the Courier Journal and there were more coupons in this Red Plum insert than in the insert from the Herald Leader. These coupons included:
The same McDonald's Coupons that were in the Herald Leader
Save $2.00 on any Dial Nutriskin Lotion
Save $2.00 on any Kibbles and Bits
Save $.60 on any Bertolli Pasta Sauce
Save $1.00 on any 2 Uncle Ben's Ready Rice
Save $1.00 on 2 Beggin' Strips
Save $2.00 on L'oreal Magic Perfecting Base
Save $1.00 on L'oreal Studio Line Styling Product
Save $1.00 on L'oreal Vive Pro Shampoo
Save $.75 on L'oreal Kids Shampoo
Save $3.00 on L'oreal Youth Code Product
Save $1.00 on L'oreal Skincare product
Save $2.00 on L'oreal haircolor product
Save $5.00 on any 2 L'oreal haircolor products
Save $1.00 on any Robitussin 4 oz or larger
Save $1.00 when you buy 2 Raisinets stand up bags
Save $.50 when you buy 2 boxes of Raisinets
Save $.50 on any 2 Pop Secret Products
Save $1.00 on any 1 Emerald Breakfast on the Go Product (7.5 oz or larger)
Buy one get one free Whiskas tray
Save $1.50 on any 1 bag of Whiskas dry food for cats
Save $1.00 on Sprayway Glass Cleaner
Save $1.00 on any Sundown Vitamins

We personally purchased the Louisville Courier Journal this week due to the larger number of coupons...but always be sure to evaluate which insert is better for you and your family! I have no shame when it comes to these papers and I will pull out the coupons from each paper and compare them to make sure I am getting the best deal for my money. The Herald Leader is $2.00 per paper while the Courier Journal is $1.75 per paper. Examine the coupons and then decide where your money will better be spent this week :)

100% Free :)

This weekend has been filled with freebies here in the Patterson house! EVERYTHING you see in the picture above was free. I paid the tax on the items, but these items being on sale and then combined with my coupons made it all free! So I know you are asking...how did you do that!? Let me explain....

This picture is a little blurry so I will break down exactly what we got and how!

*16 tubes of Colgate toothpaste ~ This week they are on sale for $.98 at Kroger and I had paper coupons from 2/13 Smart Source insert for "Save $.50 on 1" which Kroger will double to $1.00. This coupon combined with the sale price made all 16 of these...FREE!

*20 packages of Airheads ~ Kroger has these for $.79 and I had paper coupons from 2/6 Smart Source insert for "Save $.50 on 1." Kroger doubled my coupons (of which I had 20 of) and it made these all FREE!

*1 Tide Stain Release ~ Kroger's sale on this was $5.99 and I had a paper coupon from 1/30 P&G insert for "Save $3.00 on 1." I combined this coupon with the $3.00 off eCoupon on my Kroger card making this item FREE!

*6 Colgate Wisps ~ As you came in the door at Kroger these items were in a bin and were on sale for $.98 each. I had coupons from the 2/6 Smart Source for "Save $.50 on 1" and this coupon was doubled making these items FREE!

*7 Boxes of Gain Fabric Sheets ~ The Dollar General sells the 60 count boxes for $2.75 and I had coupons from the 2/13 Red Plum insert that allowed me to save $3.00 on 1. With these coupons the DG paid me $.25 each to take these home FREE!

*3 bottles of Palmolive Dish Soap ~ Dollar General sells these bottles for $1.00 each and I had 3 coupons (not sure where these came from....I think they were mailed to me) for $1.00 off of 1 bottle making all of these..FREE!

*4 packs of Better than Ears dog treats ~ At the Dollar General you can purchase a pack of 4 for only $2.00 each. I had 4 coupons from the 2/13 Smart Source insert that allowed me to save $1.00 on each package. This means that I paid $4.00 on these items, but I also had a coupon from the DG that allowed me to save $5.00 when I spent $25. I was able to save $5.00 making all 4 of these FREE with $1.00 to spare!

*4 bottles of Sunny D ~ Caeden loves this stuff and the Dollar General sells the small bottles for $1.00 each! I had coupons for $.25 off each 1 (again...not sure where I got these!) making them $.75 each! With the extra $1.00 left over from the dog treats and the money the DG paid me to take home the Gain fabric sheets these were absolutely FREE!

*12 candy bars (Milky Way and 3 Musketeers) ~ I stumbled across these when I was at Food Lion this week! They had Milky Way and 3 Musketeers buy one get one free. I remembered that I had a coupon that allowed me to buy 2 and get 1 free so with this coupon (from 2/6 Red Plum) I was able to buy 1 and get 2 free! I had lots of coupons for this deal and I was able to get 12 candy bars absolutely FREE!

*2 trial sizes of Aquafresh Extreme Clean toothpaste ~ Wal-Mart has the trial sizes of this toothpaste for $.97 and if you go to www.aquafresh.com you can print a coupon for $1.00 off any Aquafresh Extreme Clean. Since trial sizes are not excluded so I got both of these for FREE!

*I also must mention that I got 8 rolls of Mentos for free as well...but they aren't in my picture. The Dollar General had these for $.50 a roll and I had a coupon from 2/6 Smart Source insert for $.50 off 1 roll making all 8 of these FREE!

I hope that you all are starting to see how easy it is to get items absolutely free! Now...do I need 20 packs of Airheads or 12 candy bars...NO!! When I can get items for free I go ahead and get them, even if it is not something I may need or will use. Chad and I donate a lot of our items to our church (Southside Christian) and their Agape House. The candy will be used for the clients I work with, Caeden's birthday party this summer, or even parades that we will participate in during the summer. Always, always, ALWAYS clip all of your coupons even if you don't think it is something you will use. When you can get items for free and can bless someone else with it...it is worth your time!

Please remember to check back often as I am trying my best to post all the deals and steals that I am finding. I will always tell you exactly which deals I am cashing in on and how you can do the same! If you ever have a question feel free to leave it below and I will do my best to answer it! Coming soon...Kroger deals for 2/20-2/26 :)

Saving for College...One shopping trip at a time!

Since my last post was all about babies and their many expenses, I thought it would be fitting to talk about college savings and how my family is using our shopping trips to help save! Back when I was still in college I learned about a program called Upromise. Since I understood how expensive college can be for parents, I opened my own Upromise account and started saving for the day that I had kids of my own. Now that Caeden is here and those college worries are real, I have really focused on this simple way to save money for his college education and all it costs me each week is just a little bit of my time. So what is Upromise? It is basically an online service that allows you to turn a small percentage of your online purchases, dining out expenses, grocery bill, and even vacation expenses into savings for your child's college! Upromise has partnered with many companies who have agreed to allow parents to bank a percentage of their spendings on select products. So how does this work?

The first step is to head over to Upromise and set up an account. It doesn't take long and before you know it you are ready to save. The next step is to add your shopper's cards to the account and start adding grocery eCoupons. These eCoupons do not work the same way that the ones from Kroger or Cellfire do. Here is an example: This week as I prepare for my shopping trip I will go to Upromise and browse their grocery eCoupons for the products I will purchase at Kroger. I know I am getting Pop Tarts and it just so happens there is an eCoupon on Upromise for "Save $1.00 on 2 boxes of Pop Tarts" so I add it to my card. When I go through the check out and purchase my Pop Tarts, the $1.00 savings does not come off of my bill, but instead is added to Caeden's savings account on Upromise!

The idea is very simple and it is great to be rewarded for purchasing products that we would ALREADY be buying in the first place! This is also the way it works for online purchases. The next time you wish to purchase items from Walmart.com, head over to Upromise and access this website from the Upromise website. This way whenever you checkout at Wal-Mart, a percentage of the money you spend online will automatically be banked into your child's college savings account. There are hundreds of online stores that have partnered with Upromise so make sure you are making your purchases through this website so that you get the college savings added straight to your child's account.

Upromise also many other ways that you can save for college including a special credit card that instantly gives you 1% savings on all purchases. Thanks to Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University my family no longer uses credit cards and we haven't for the past 5 years! It is very freeing to be able to pay for our purchases with cash, but if you use credit cards responsibly this may be a great option for a credit card. If you are already up to your ears in credit card debt and are looking for a way out, check out Dave Ramsey's website. He truly changed our lives :)

Okay now that I am off that tangent I hope you can see how purchasing everyday items can help you start a college savings account for your child. Even if you do not already have children, you can go right now and start a Upromise account for them! Who doesn't want to save even more at the grocery checkout line each week or through our online purchases!? It will take a little time to load those eCoupons each week, but over the course of 18 years you could have a small account full of money for your child to use when college comes knocking at your door! Watch for tonight's post on the Kroger Mega Sale savings for the week! I know I am excited about my shopping trip this week...hope you all are too :)

This just in!

I am so excited to announce that Kroger has a new instant win game that starts today!! This game runs for 17 days and you can log in and play one time per day. This game is called the Daytona 500 You Pick the Winner and the concept is easy. Once this game loads you will be asked to choose the race car that you think will win the race. Once your car is chosen press go and the cars will speed around the racetrack! If your car wins the race you will receive a free item loaded to your shopper's card! I played a game similar to this one a little while ago and received a free package of Oscar Meyer lunch meat...so log in and play every day!

Congratulations! Your baby is....EXPENSIVE!

Oh the joy I experienced when I held my precious baby boy for the very first time. Words can't describe all the emotions, thoughts and worries that suddenly filled my new mommy mind. What would he grow up to be? Would he sleep at night? How expensive was he REALLY? Well it didn't take long for that last question to be answered! I made the decision very early on in my pregnancy that I would formula feed Caeden. Chad and I were very picky about the type of formula we would purchase Caeden and we did our research to determine what would be best for his growth and development. At that time price was not a concern, but when we went to buy that first can of formula we realized just how much our new bundle of joy would cost us each week! Once we factored in other necessities such as diapers, wipes, doctor co-payments, clothing, toys, etc. I became very determined to save as much money as possible, while still providing for my baby in the best way possible. My solution to this dilemma was...coupons! Even if you don't have a little one at home please read this post because there are many lessons to be learned that do not necessarily relate to babies :)

Lesson #1 ~ Decide which products you WILL be brand loyal to
As a new mommy I knew from day 1 that unless Caeden was allergic to the brand of formula we chose....that we would stick with this brand until he was old enough to drink whole milk. Formula is one product that you can't change weekly or as it is on sale. With this is mind I now had to rely on one certain brand to send me enough coupons to use each month so I could lower my cost each week. After spending the first several months waiting on them to send me coupons whenever they wanted...I took matters into my own hands! I went to the desired formula's manufacturer website and sent them an email explaining my situation and asking them to send me coupons on a monthly basis. I explained how much formula my son drank each week, how much this was costing my family, and my desire to stick with their brand for the first year of his life. To my surprise this company was very easy to work with and they cooperated with my requests and each month I had an ample supply of coupons coming to my mailbox! After that experience I realized that it's okay to be brand loyal if it is one that you truly believe in. At the same time I learned that you have to ask for what you want and need! This doesn't just apply to baby formula either. If you have to use Dove Soap (like me) because of sensitive skin and you don't feel you are getting enough coupons and incentives from this company...tell them!! Companies NEED for us to stick to their brand and if all it takes for you to buy their product is for them to send you a few coupons each month, then they are happy to oblige!

Lesson #2 ~ Drop the brand loyalty on products whenever you can!
In the same breath that I tell you to stick to certain brands you believe in....I will also tell you to NOT be brand loyal as much as possible! I will admit that when Caeden was a baby I had my preference of diapers, wipes, pain reliever, sippy cups..you name it! It seemed like every time Caeden needed diapers or wipes I always had coupons for the least desired brands. Well after paying full price several times for these products I changed my attitude very quickly. I started scouring the internet for printable coupons and electronic coupons that would save me the most money. I began trying different styles of the least desired diapers and started discovering that each diaper brand had SOMETHING I could live with. I then started shopping smart and when Brand X went on sale and I had coupons...I would load up. I would use these diapers until Brand Y went on sale and then I would use my coupons to stock up on that brand. Kroger is the store that saved me the most money on these essentials because I could use my printable coupons in combination with my electronic coupons and I started to see my savings explode! You will also learn that if you go through the check out line with Brand X, most of the time Kroger will print you a Catalina coupon for Brand Y to use on your next visit! I realized I couldn't afford to be brand loyal on ALL of my baby products and quickly chose products that I could have some flexibility with!

Lesson #3 ~ Use those Manufacturer Websites to your benefit
If you are an expectant mother I would encourage you to start visiting those manufacturer websites NOW! When you go to sites for Pampers, Huggies, Luvs, Desitin, Johnson & Johnson, Gerber, etc. and sign up for their email and mailing list, they will start sending you coupons and samples immediately! When I was in those early stages of deciding which formula we would feed Caeden I also signed up on their websites as well. It seemed like each week I would get something from one of these companies! I loved getting samples to use in his diaper bag or to try out before I decided to purchase a product. Caeden is 3 years old and I STILL get coupons from most of these companies for products that are age-appropriate for him. If you do not sign up on their websites then they do not know you are out there! Sign up today and let them know about your children and you can sit back and watch the coupons come directly to your home or your email inbox. *Secret Alert* This lesson does not just apply to baby brands! I have signed up with all different types of websites in order for them to recognize me as a customer and to send coupons to my home. I can't tell you how many companies send me coupons on a regular basis (either to my home or to my email) because I signed up on their website. If you haven't done this yet....start today!

Lesson #4 ~ Start Scanning those Baby Magazines!
As a pregnant mommy-to-be I couldn't learn enough about the new baby that was growing inside of me. I started buying baby magazines at the store, subscribing to magazines, and even reading them while waiting to go into the doctor's office! I quickly realized that these magazines had lots of coupons inside of them! Don't be afraid to cut those coupons out of there when you are finished reading them. Some of the best offers and deals I got were because I pulled a coupon out of the magazine I was reading while in the OBGYN waiting room! Always be on the lookout for coupons that can help you save money on your new baby and don't be afraid to cut them out if you know that you will use them!

Lesson #5 ~ Think twice before paying for those expensive warehouse club memberships
Like most new parents, Chad and I thought that if we wanted to save money on all of our baby products then obviously we would need to purchase a warehouse club membership (such as Sam's Club). In the first few months Caeden grew so quickly that we didn't need to stock up on a certain size of diaper because within a week or so he was in a new size! At about 3 or 4 months old we realized that he wasn't changing sizes so quickly and we purchased our first membership to Sam's Club. I was so excited to go in there and really save some money on disposable diapers! Boy was I wrong! After doing the math and being told that I could NOT use my coupons, I realized that all Sam's was good for was buying BIG boxes of diapers! I was not going to save money at this store because their prices were set in stone and the coupons that I had worked hard to save up were not going to help me. At this point I stopped shopping at Sam's Club and went back to Kroger where I could use my paper coupons and electronic coupons together to really save some money. If you are thinking about paying for a store membership for the purpose of diapers I would strongly suggest that you do some price comparisons before forking over the $30+ it will take to become a member. In our case this actually cost us more money than we saved :(

Lesson #6 ~ Use the customer reward programs that are offered
My last lesson concerning babies and their products is about the programs that certain products offer. For Pampers it is their "Gifts to Grow" program and for Huggies it is their "Enjoy the Ride" program. On the inside of each pack of diapers and wipes you purchase (if it is Pampers or Huggies) is a small sticker with a code printed on it. When you go to Huggies.com or Pampers.com you can register for these programs and each time you purchase a pack of diapers you can enter your code from the diapers you purchase. Every time you enter a code you are given points and these points begin to add up. You can then cash in your reward points for coupons, toys, gift cards, and many other neat prizes. It is a pain sometimes to keep up with these little sticker codes, but I can tell you that if these companies are going to reward me for spending so much money on their diapers...I am going to accept their rewards :)

I hope that this post has given you a little more insight into making your new baby (or growing one!) a little more affordable for you and your family. The money that I saved on these essential products have allowed us to start Caeden a savings account and start planning for his college education! Speaking of saving for college....watch for an upcoming post where I will be talking about a site that allows you to save money on products you are purchasing each week for your child's college education! With the cost of education this is a service that Chad I and taking advantage of for our little guy! They grow so quickly that it is never to early to start planning for their futures :)
